Five albums into their fiercely prolific career, The Wilder Blue have grown all the more fearless in following their instincts. With their new LP Cinco, the Texas-bred five-piece arrive at their most fully realized statement yet, revealing a singular musical force whose staunch independence has granted them a rare sense of freedom. As the most collaborative work to date from The Wilder Blue-lead vocalist Zane Williams, lead guitarist Paul Eason, drummer Lyndon Hughes, bassist Sean Rodriguez, and multi-instrumentalist Andy Rogers-Cinco ultimately finds the band widening their creative circle while doubling down on the signature elements of their soul-soothing country-rock: adventurous musicianship, deeply human storytelling, and transcendent five-part harmonies. The follow-up to 2025's self-released, fan-funded, and critically acclaimed Still In The Runnin', Cinco came to life at The Sonic Ranch-a remote studio in the Texas border town of Tornillo, where the band joined up with keyboardist Travis Bishop, steel guitarist Harrison Yount, and fiddle player Steve Auburn to bring new texture and color to their shapeshifting sound. "We'd never worked with outside musicians on a record, but a lot of these songs seemed to want more of a classic country instrumentation," says Williams. "Instead of worrying about how we'd recreate everything live, we just did whatever served the songs best, and in a way it felt like my dream band." Produced by Hughes and The Wilder Blue, Cinco both broadens their palette and crystallizes the telepathic chemistry they've honed through relentless touring, including supporting the likes of Luke Combs, Flatland Cavalry, and Hank Williams Jr. In a potent introduction to the album's universe, the 10-song LP opens on "Sinners and Strays"-a gently loping but high-spirited celebration of The Wilder Blue's band-of-brothers solidarity, penned during a beachside writers retreat that set the tone for Cinco's unbound creativity. "The whole reason I started this band was to find the camaraderie I never had as a solo artist," says Williams, who formed The Wilder Blue in 2019. "'Sinners and Strays' imagines us as a gang of cowboys or outlaws riding together through whatever comes next-everybody has a role, everybody pulls their weight, and that's exactly what this band feels like." While Cinco stands as a powerful testament to The Wilder Blue's expansive musicality, its songs also locate an unexpected sweet spot between unbridled exploration and a more direct embrace of their country roots. To that end, "Texas Women" unfolds as a fun-loving story-song in which a big-time job interview morphs into a manifesto for their homeland, with country legend Tracy Byrd chiming in on the track's riotous tribute to the finer points of Texas life (e.g., "Longneck bottles and tight fittin' jeans / Nineties country with a Cajun fiddle / Don't get no better than that if you ask me"). Meanwhile, on "When He's Out of Sight," The Wilder Blue unearth a timeless heartbreak song written by Williams back in his solo days, recasting its wistful tale of lost love with exuberant grooves and luminous guitar work. "That's one of those songs I've always had at the back of my mind, but it never made sense until we had this lineup of musicians," says Williams. "I wrote it at a time when I was playing a lot of dance halls and honky-tonks, and I wanted it to sound like something you'd hear on the jukebox at an old dive bar where you can still smoke inside."
